A car laden with improvised explosives device (IED) has Thursday evening went off near General Kahiye police academy.
According to witnesses, the explosion affected the surrounding area including a restaurant and a security checkpoint.
No group immediately claimed responsibility, though al-Shabaab previously carried out deadly attacks in the city.
