A heavy explosion is reported in Mogadishu, the Somali capital on Monday morning amidst tight security in the seaside city.
A witness, speaking to Mogadishu Online said the explosion occurred in the area around Mogadishu shopping Mall, near the offices of the city’s municipality.
There was no immediate confirmation of the casualties from the government as the area is sealed off by the police and ambulances are on the scene to transport the victims to the hospitals.
One witness who spoke with MOL says ” at least 10 people are killed”.
Al-Shabaab jihadists seeking to topple the internationally-backed government regularly carry out attacks in the Somali capital.
The al-Qaeda affiliated group was largely driven out of Mogadishu in 2011 and has lost many of its strongholds, but it retains control of large rural swathes of the country and continues to wage a guerrilla war against the authorities.
